What are Dentures?
Dentures are simply removable replacements for missing teeth that can help restore a person’s smile. Dentures benefit overall appearance for individuals who have lost their natural teeth due to gum disease, tooth decay or dental trauma and for most people dentures facilitate clear speech or articulation and ability to eat than without teeth. The Hillside Smile Dental Care offers dentures that are comfortable and closer to natural looking teeth giving an improved overall appearance of the mouth and smile. Based on patient needs, we offer two main types of dentures; full and partial dentures. The former type is utilized when all teeth are missing either conventionally or immediately, while the latter type is utilized when some of the natural teeth still remain intact.
How do Dentures work?
The Hillside Smile Dental Care provides Dentures that are custom-made within a dental laboratory based on individual impressions of the patient’s mouth. Full dentures are created by using a matching flesh color acrylic base that fits over the gums with the upper denture covering the roof of the mouth and the lower denture leaving space for the tongue.
In order to determine the most suitable dentures, we offer three types of dentures; Conventional Full Denture, Immediate Full Denture and Partial Denture. A conventional full denture is ready for placement after removal of teeth and gum tissue has completely healed, with a healing process of several months during which time the patient will be without teeth. Unlike conventional dentures, immediate full dentures are placed immediately after removal of teeth with measurements of the mouth taken during a prior dental visit. Although most patients are satisfied about not being without teeth during the healing process, immediate full dentures need to be refined and remade several months after the healing period since bone and gum tissue reshape when healing takes place. Our dental professionals prioritize in discussing the potential benefits, limitations and possible consequences of considering the type of dentures best suited to patient health. A partial denture is utilized when some natural teeth remain in the lower and upper jaw and rests on a metal framework attached to the natural teeth. In some cases, crowns may be placed on some of the natural teeth to account for removable ‘bridges’.
What do new Dentures feel like?
We inform our patients about the aftermath of denture placements with feelings of discomfort, minor irritations or soreness being common within the first few weeks or months. Patients are also informed about a loose feeling in the muscles of the cheeks and tongue as holding the dentures in place takes a little practice causing eating and speaking to be slightly challenging with an increase in saliva flow. However, these feelings reside on their own once the mouth muscles adjust to the new dentures.
How long do Dentures last?
Dentures may last over a period of time but we highly recommend annual dental check-ups to determine whether the dentures need to be relined based on natural changes to the mouth in old age. We advise our patients to practice good dental hygiene to reduce any oral irritation.
